I am aware of the contingent of officers that returned to Russia in 1929 or 1930 to return the remains of soldiers interned there but I am also aware that not all were returned for various reasons. Is there a list of names of those still interned in Russia and if so how may I obtain this list? Thank you-mailman

James Willson Chesher vs James Wilson Chasser by mcchesher on 8/19/2009 at 12:21 am
James Willson Chesher is my father-in-law's grandfather. I came across a digital copy of "The Romance of Company A" by Dorothea York, and "Acting Sgt Chesher" is mentioned on page 95 as having been injured by the same shrapnel which injured Cpt. Odjard. This makes 1/24/1919 the date that Acting Sgt Chesher lost his arm. On page 147 it once again lists Sgt. James W Chesher as receiving citation for gallantry in action. However, Chesher is listed nowhere on the company roster beginning on page 149. Instead Corporal James Wilson Chesser is listed. In many other records we've looked at, including yours - both Chesher and Chesser (sometimes Chasser) are from Saginaw, MI and listed as wounded 1/24/1919. So - what is the chance that these are the same person? Do you have any distinguishing documents differentiating the two of them? I don't know the definition of acting sergeant, but if Chesher began service as a corporal and then was breveted to sergeant, one might expect to find him on the company roster listed under Corporal which is where we find Chesser/Chasser. I have a social security number for Sgt Chesher ending in 3918. There are just too many commonalities to not think a recording error may have been made. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Kind regards Sarah Emm Chesher

Dear Sarah Emm Chesher, Thank you for your comment. We don't have any original documents of James W. Chesher or James W. Chesser, or Chasser in our collection. We used the following sources when we added both names to our database: Hugh D. McPhail papers, 1918-1957 (contains both names, Chesher and Chesser), "The romance of Company "A", 339th infantry, A. N. R. E. F." (Chesher and Chesser), "A compendium of the life of the Polar Bear Association..." (Chesher and Chesser), and "Biennial reunion programs" (only Chesher). Best, Olga Virakhovskaya.
