Sorry I took so long to respond my E-mail adress is joebackus61@yahoo.com I was looking for info on L company 339 th inf. my grandfather and his two brothers from mt.forest Mi.served in this unit. his name was henry schwerin, brothers otto, and john.otto was wounded in landing at archangle by a sniper. Or so the writing on back of picture says.he is laying on cot next to a ship on the dock.there are afew pictures of fort custer. some others I can't find yet. his stories where of how cold it was,and how the russian didn't want to fight more than he did.and the terrible conditions they staid in.many of the last names in his unit are our neihbors now mc quarter, preger, ryan, lauzon, walczak. there were afew more I forgot. these family live within three mile of my family homestead which we setteled on in the 1880's.my grandfather was a lumberjack and farmer in a very rural area before the war.he also spent his winters on saginaw bay in a log cabin built 5 miles out on the ice for 2 to 3 months fishing pickeral. so he was used to cold and rugged life.and said this was worse than any other thing he experianced.he was 38 years old before he married and had 8 children my mother was the youngest.he died in 1965, my uncle otto a few years latter.otto only had one child. I never knew john or heard much of him.there was a few men who came to see "hank" and said they where polar bears with him.his sons all served during ww-II,korea and the middle east durring there independance from france and england.

Thank you for your comment. We will be glad to add Otto and John Schwerin's names to the roster of Polar Bear soldiers. In order to do so, we need to have some documentation verifying their participation in the Polar Bear expedition, for example copies of their military papers. Materials can be mailed or faxed to us: Bentley Historical Library 1150 Beal Ave. Ann Arbor, Mich. 48109-2113 Attn.: Len Coombs. Fax: (734) 936-1333.
